MTV (Music Television) wystartowała 1 sierpnia 1981 roku z licencją na emisję jedynie 180 teledysków. Pierwszym zaprezentowanym był obraz o przewrotnym tytule "Video Killed The Radio Star" nowofalowego bandu The Buggles. Dziś muzyczna telewizja posiada licencję na tysiące teledysków, dociera do półtora miliarda osób a jej wpływ na kulturę masową jest taki olbrzymi, że socjologowie mówią często o Pokoleniu MTV.
